The theme of making the most of life is central to Kimberly Levaco’s journey in the Arts Club’s production of the Tony-winning musical Kimberly Akimbo. With music by Jeanine Tesori and book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire, it is based on his 2001 play. Directed by Ashlie Corcoran, it runs from April 2 to May 3 at the Stanley BFL Canada Stage.

Kimberly Levaco (Lisa Horner) faces many challenges at only sixteen years old. She suffers from a rare genetic disorder that accelerates premature aging, limiting her life expectancy to around 20 years. Her dysfunctional parents (Josh Epstein & Steffanie Davis) often fail to recognize her as a typical teenager, which significantly impacts her self-esteem. Additionally, she has to cope with her eccentric criminal Aunt Debra (Madeleine Suddaby), who, despite her criminal activities and unconventional morals, is often perceived as more supportive and honest towards her.

Amidst the chaos, she maintains a harmonious friendship with her classmates Teresa (Sarah Cantuba), Delia (Angella Cody), Martin (Joaquín Little), and Aaron (James Ross). Kimberly later develops a genuine bond with Seth (Jason Sakaki), a quirky boy at the ice-skating rink who is obsessed with anagrams. The chemistry between Kimberly and Seth brought warmth and sincerity to the production.

The standout musical performance was “Better,” Aunt Debra’s lively opening solo sung by Madeleine Suddaby. Her vocal range, control, and belting were perfect! The whole performance left me amazed and captivated.

I was impressed by Lisa Horner’s portrayal of Kimberly, capturing the essence of teenage emotions so beautifully. Honourable mention to rising performer Angella Cody as Delia, who brought great depth, confidence, and excellent voice projection to her role.

One of the most memorable parts of the production is the way the ice-skating scenes are staged, with the cast expertly performing on real skates. Watching them glide across the stage adds an exciting touch that feels both impressively powerful and a bit dreamlike, making the experience even more special!

Kimberly Akimbo is a musical that encourages self-reflection and motivates you to cherish your life. If you love 90s style and intimate, character-focused stories, this musical is highly recommended!
