Hometown: I was born and raised in Steveston! It’s a little village at the bottom left corner of Richmond!
Education & Training: My theatre journey started when I was young at Gateway Theatre! I started with their musical theatre classes and then ended up going to Capilano University for Musical Theatre!
What influenced you to pursue a career in theatre?
I have always had a deep love for theatre since my parents started taking me to see musicals when I was a kid. My parents are huge supporters of me and theatre, so I have always had an amazing support group behind me when I chose to start pursuing theatre.
But the person who convinced me to go to theatre school was my high school drama teacher, Mr. Garner. He was one of the best teachers I could have asked for and was always so supportive of his students and pushed us to follow our dreams.
What do you love about theatre?
There aren’t many things about theatre that I don’t love. It is where I learned to truly and authentically be myself. There aren’t many jobs in the world where everyone deeply loves what they do. The passion that theatre people have is so strong, and getting to work alongside so many others who love theatre as much as I do is a blessing.
Which plays and musicals were you in, and what were your roles?
Not a lot of people know this, but my first full musical was in my second year of university as the Emcee in Cabaret (Arbutus Theatre CapU)! After that, I was in SpongeBob the Musical (Blueshore Theatre CapU) as Ensemble / us SpongeBob and Patrick, then in Monster (Direct Theatre Collective) as Perseus and Iphicles.
This year, I have three shows lined up! I will be in Shrek the Musical (Royal City Musical Theatre) as one of the Three Little Pigs, then in the ensemble / us Prince Eric and King Triton in The Little Mermaid (Theatre Under the Stars), and ending the year with one of my dream roles, Olaf in Frozen (Kelowna Actors Studio)!
If you hadn’t become a performer, what might you have pursued professionally?
This is a fantastic question because I have had many iterations of what I wanted for my future. If you asked me when I was 5 years old, I would have told you that I was going to be a clock. Obviously thats not going to happen, so I moved onto bigger and better dreams. I was going to be… A Starbucks Barista.
Realizing that I was dreaming too big, I decided to settle on something simple, stable and easy to break into, a profession in theatre. Since the whole clock thing didn’t work out, I guess I will keep doing theatre.
Career goals?
My goals for the moment are to continue doing theatre in whatever way I possibly can. Within the last few years, I have been an assistant producer, assistant stage manager and a director. I hope to be able to work in theatre for the rest of my life because there is no other job in the world I want to do.
