MJ: The Musical tells the story of Michael Jackson’s (Melvin Gray Jr.) creative journey while preparing for his 1992 Dangerous World Tour, almost a decade after releasing his iconic album Thriller, which remains the best-selling album of all time. The production ran at Queen Elizabeth Theatre from November 25 to 30.
The musical, directed and choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon and written by two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage, uses Michael Jackson’s greatest hits to tell his story. It highlights his challenging childhood, his rise to fame, and the personal as well as public pressures he faced.
The set design, crafted by two-time Tony Award winner Derek McLane, primarily features a spacious, industrial dance rehearsal studio that smoothly transforms into imaginative sequences reflecting Michael Jackson’s memories and dreams.
Award-winning designer Paul Tazewell created the costumes, capturing Michael Jackson’s signature style from various career eras. Notable looks include the “Billie Jean” black jacket and glove, the red “Thriller Jacket,” and the “Smooth Criminal” white fedora and jacket.
Wheeldon’s depiction of Michael Jackson’s psychological struggles and the relentless media attention he endured really deepened my understanding of the dangers of fame. I also liked how Wheeldon used the character of MTV reporter Rachel (Kristin Stokes) to trigger flashbacks into Jackson’s past.
Experiencing MJ: The Musical was incredibly emotional and nostalgic. Michael Jackson’s artistry redefined global pop culture and left a lasting legacy. As a fan, I’m grateful I got to see the show here in Vancouver. In three words, the musical was mesmerizing, powerful, and dazzling.
