Studio 58’s inventive take on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet kept the audience engaged from start to finish! Under the direction of Stephen Drover, with choreography by Ellie McCullough, costumes by Melicia Zaini and Amber Smith, and lighting design by John Webber, the production delivers a fresh theatrical experience! Performances run from November 20th to 30th at Langara College’s Studio 58.
Drover invented a unique approach by exploring the events leading up to the tragic demise of Romeo and Juliet, but presenting them in reverse order across five days, which I thought was impressive! This method created a calmer, more lighthearted atmosphere, with a fun and comedic tone, since the play wouldn’t have a tragic ending.
The chemistry between the cast onstage was a delight to watch. Mercutio (Juno) and the Nurse (Irene Lozano-Garcia) captivated the audience with their impeccable comedic timing. Saidi Mader delivered an excellent performance, capturing Juliet’s emotional turmoil caused by her ill-fated romance with Romeo.
Scenographer David Roberts utilized a multi-level staging design, featuring staircases and wooden platforms. This approach added depth to the small stage space.

Watching this play was truly delightful. I especially enjoyed the creative twist on the plot. In summary, the play was innovative, charming, and comical!
