“Choir Boy” is a play written by Academy Award-winning playwright and screenwriter Tarell Alvin McCraney. He also wrote the screenplay for the acclaimed 2016 film, Moonlight. The play is set in the fictional Drew Prep School for Boys. The school is committed to building “strong, ethical black men.”

The story begins with Headmaster Marrow inducting senior student Pharus Young as the new leader of the school choir after he had been bullied by the former choir leader, Bobby Marrow. Even though Pharus was the leader, he continued getting bullied due to his sexuality. Pharus was aware of the discrimination, but it did not stop him from living his truth and pursuing his passion for singing. Supporting choir members include kindhearted Junior, intelligent David, and Anthony, Pharus’ roommate who struggles with his identity.

“Choir Boy” explores themes of sexuality, race, religion, music, and politics. I enjoyed the insightful storyline and the vocal performances. The story was very moving and inspirational. It perfectly teaches us how the power of music can empower us in many ways.
