“Mean Girls The Musical” is a play based on the 2004 cult classic film Mean Girls. The script was written by 9-time Emmy Award-winning actress Tina Fey, who had also written the screenplay for the film.

The story follows a naive homeschooled girl, Cady Heron’s experience of trying to fit in as the “new kid” in high school. She first befriends Janis, a broken girl filled with bitterness and resentment and her flamboyant friend, Damian. Not long after, she “befriends” the most popular girls in the school, queen bee Regina George, insecure Gretchen Wieners and ditzy Karen Smith. Janis orchestrated the whole scheme for revenge towards Regina for spreading a hurtful rumour about her that ruined her life. Befriending the popular girls gave Cady an instant popularity boost at school. Cady got so caught up in popularity that she ultimately suffered an identity crisis. To her surprise, she wins Spring Fling Queen and gives a moving speech which proves her personal growth and maturity.

I have watched Mean Girls several times growing up. It is one of my favourite movies of all time. I loved how Tina Fey included some iconic quotes from the film in the play. The crowd laughed every time the quotes were brought up. I also loved how the play was modernized to appeal to Gen Z viewers.

The visuals and outfits in the play were very colourful and vibrant. The songs were cheerful and fun. I enjoyed the vocal and dance performances from the cast. The play was “so fetch”! It will keep you entertained.
